Sanitary Napkin Production Unit Gorakhpur

The low cost mini sanitary napkin manufacturing plant, a revolutionary concept among the high cost complicated machines now in use, will be of immense benefit to the women in remote areas of Gorakhpur U.P.

DAY 1

In a bid to spread awareness on benefits of adopting hygienic practices within women folk in Gorakhpur and its adjoining small villages, Oxigen & Sahyog Foundation in collaboration with NGO Urja energy will provide low cost sanitary napkins to women in Gorakhpur A sanitary napkin production unit machine was inaugurated on 23rd January 2017, Monday evening at the small village in Gorakhpur, claimed to be the first such initiative in the Region. Local People from the Village inaugurated a low cost sanitary napkin manufacturing plant, at Women Empowerment Centre at Gorakhpur in the presence of Representatives from Oxigen & Sahyog Foundation and Urja energy, On this occasion Mr. Rajpal Duggal, Group President Oxigen services said "The plant is a revolutionary concept at a time of high-cost complicated machines and will be of immense benefit to women in the remote areas of Gorakhpur and adjoining village. Napkins produced by these machines are quite economical compared to other products in the market. The cost of making a sanitary pad (at the unit) is less than a third of the most competitive brand" .The initiative has been undertaken by spreading awareness on benefits of adopting hygienic practices and overcome problems of availability and affordability of sanitary napkins to the women in Backward regions.

On the occasion, not only dignitaries from Foundation were present but also representatives of Women Empowerment NGOs, Anganwadi workers, ANM’s, and villagers were present. Among the huge gathering there were more than 170 women attending this inauguration ceremony.

The inauguration ceremony was followed by an awareness camp on the benefits of adopting hygienic practices. The aim of the program is to overcome problems of availability and affordability of sanitary napkins in the region. The machine has been designed and developed by Arunachalam Muruganantham which won the award for best innovation for the betterment of society in 2006 and an Indian presidential award for innovation.

Congratulating team Oxigen for this successful installation of the set up Ms Meher Sarid, Group President & Corporate affairs head Said “women should shed fears around their monthly periods and should not consider it a curse. She also called upon people to change their attitude towards the issue. People still shy away from discussing issues around sex education and periods, she said, adding the thought process needs to be changed along with the changing lifestyle. The decision to install the machine was taken as a need was felt for it”.

DAY 2

Continuing the series of events planned on 24th January 2017 morning we left Gorakhpur around 9am to reach Pharenda, block of Mahrajganj about 60 kms. On reaching Kasturba Gandhi School an awareness camp was organized for girls from BPL .Urja has a library at this center. After awareness session we did interact with the girls and introduced them to digital India and briefed them about the same this was done because All of these girls already had a bank account in which they receive govt grant for books, stationery and uniform. The session was held to make them more informed about cashless India.After that we left for another school at Belwakazi 40kms near Nepal boarder .where another Menstrual hygiene awareness session was conducted with more than 200 girls from class 8th t0 12th Std .Urja has a school and Usha silai center in this school.

After interacting with girls we meet the women at vocational center and organized a small session on awareness followed by digital literacy awareness. Next destination was siswa village,which was again 45kms with very bad roads on the way, We stopped at siswa Bazaar on Urja energy solar panel and learn about it's working. Finally we reached a very backward village; siswa here Urja is constructing it's center for vocational studies along with 2 room set for their donors and visitors to stay during the visit.Here we met few people and discussed about micro ATM benefits. Sanitary Napkins packet was handed over to each participant after the session in all the locations by Oxigen & Sahyog foundation Around 7pm we left siswa and reached back Gorakhpur around 10.30 pm, due to dense fog on the way with Zero visibility on the road.

DAY 3

On 25th January 2017 Morning before leaving for Lucknow a meeting was organized between Director Urja Foundation and Oxigen TM to discuss the opportunities of installing Micro ATM at Urja facilities. Micro ATM demo along with its working and benefits were briefed in the meeting. Follow up to install Micro ATM is in process.

With the Hope Installation of low cost sanitary napkin manufacturing plant at Women Empowerment Centre Gorakhpur is a giant leap for the betterment of women ,We bid Gorakhpur adieu .
